A Season in the Everyday

A Little Time Together

Between the bigger journeys are the smaller invitations: a meal, a night out, a chance to spend a little more time with family. September gave us one of those weekends close to home, with the bustle of Kuala Lumpur on one side and the welcome quiet of a slow morning on the other.

A Night Out in the Heart of KL

Sometimes the best weekends begin with a simple message asking, “Are you doing anything this weekend?”

Earlier in the week, my cousin Gerard had reached out, and before long we had a plan: a night in Bukit Bintang, a visit to Guinness Arthur’s Storehouse, and a walk through the nearby Autumn Festival. Knowing it would probably be a late night, Ruky and I decided to make a little staycation out of it and booked ourselves into the Hilton Kuala Lumpur.

We checked in around 2:00 in the afternoon. Our Diamond status gave us access to the hotel lounge, where we enjoyed afternoon tea before heading back to our room for a short nap. By early evening, we were rested, changed, and ready for the city.

At about 6:30 p.m., we met Gerard and Annie at Pasar Seni LRT, took the MRT to Bukit Bintang, and walked over to Pavilion. Gerard’s brother Earnest and his girlfriend, Luwindha, were meeting us there. While we waited, the four of us grabbed a quick bite at The Nasi Lemak Shop in the food court. It was only meant to tide us over, but the food turned out to be pretty good.

Once Earnest and Luwindha arrived, we made our way to Arthur’s Storehouse. Drinks and appetizers soon filled the table, and the two of them had dinner there as well. Between the food, conversation, and lively pub atmosphere, the hours disappeared. It was already past 10:00 p.m. when we finally ventured outside for the Autumn Festival.

The walk was an experience in itself. Food stalls lined the way with snacks and treats, and the streets were packed with people. Music and conversation filled the night. Then we reached the main festival area, where performers occupied the stage, loudspeakers carried the music, and the crowds grew thicker still. We stayed for a while, taking it all in, before deciding we had enjoyed enough of the bustle for one night.

Gerard and Annie headed home, while Earnest, Luwindha, Ruky, and I took the monorail back toward KL Sentral, arriving around 11:00 p.m. Apparently, none of us was quite ready to call it a night. We wandered over to a nearby pub in Brickfields for one last drink. Its midnight closing finally gave us the signal to wind things down.

We walked back through KL Sentral to the Hilton, where the conversation continued in our room for just a little longer. Close to 1:00 a.m., Earnest and Luwindha called a Grab and headed home.

The next morning was considerably slower. Ruky and I enjoyed the hotel’s international breakfast buffet to the fullest. After the morning rain, the weather had turned pleasantly cool, so we spent the next couple of hours lounging by the pool with nowhere we needed to be.

At around 2:00 p.m., we checked out and headed home. A simple weekend message from Gerard had turned into a wonderfully unplanned Kuala Lumpur night: good food, a few drinks, family, festival music, plenty of conversation, and a comfortable hotel room waiting at the end of it all.

Looking Back

Close to Home

Sometimes all it takes is an invitation and a little room in the weekend. The pleasure was in being together, letting the evening unfold, and having time to slow down afterwards.

Just another little chapter in between the bigger ones.
